Authorship Signals: The Origin of the Words. The Ownership of the Message.

AI has changed the mechanics of writing. It has not removed the need for thoughtful communication.

Good writing is good thinking made visible. It means organizing ideas, considering consequences, choosing clear words, and engaging sincerely with another person. Typing every word yourself does not guarantee any of those things. Using AI does not rule them out.

A human can write carelessly. AI can produce useful, carefully reviewed work. Neither the tool nor the act of typing determines whether a message deserves trust.

Trust grows when a sender explains the process, applies appropriate judgment, and accepts responsibility for the final communication. That is what an Authorship Signal offers: a small, voluntary disclosure about how a message came to be.

Using AI should not be something people need to conceal. Nor should a sender claim human authorship when AI generated substantial content. Honest disclosure gives the reader context without ranking one method above another.

Outsource the mechanics of writing when appropriate. Do not outsource judgment, integrity, or accountability.

When AI generates a message, apply review and governance appropriate to its audience, purpose, and consequences. Human review is useful when the reviewer has the context, ability, time, and authority to correct or reject the output. Automated controls can also be meaningful; describe what they do rather than implying that a person read every message.

The sender must own the substance and authenticity of what they communicate: the factual claims, intended meaning, tone, commitments, and consequences. An automated system cannot accept that responsibility for them. An organization distributing automated messages must name an accountable person or team and provide a way to reach them.

Authorship Signals are voluntary declarations. They are not guarantees of accuracy, sincerity, quality, or independent verification. They do not detect AI, prove provenance, replace professional obligations, or certify a workflow.

Good writing is good thinking. AI can help with the words. Human judgment, appropriate governance, and genuine accountability are what give those words meaning.
